Domain Flipping.

Is there such a thing as an evergreen industry – one that exists, and is always open for business? Well domain names will be, for as long as there is energy to light a bulb and run web servers. It would seem domain names are virtually limitless. According to my research, there are around 136 million domain names active or registered for the .com, .org, .net suffixes, and more than 171,000 domain names transferred every 24 hours.

That’s excluding all the country specific domain names such as .co.uk; there were over 7 million of these back in 2008, so that figure will have increased, no doubt. Very interesting market, you would think that there must be a way of making money here.

Thinking about 171,000 domain names transferred in one day alone, there must be a cash value or transaction value attached to most of them; the great thing about a domain name is when it’s registered, an asset value is crystalised, and able to be grown in value…by the way, the highest amount ever paid for a domain name was a .com name, with the last three letters of the county of esSEX – $14m…nice, I’d be happy to pay any tax on that.
